May Happenings

Summer is almost here, though it certainly feels like it already. There are only a couple months left in the semester, which means only a couple months left with the kiddos. However, there’s still our summer City Farm Camp to look forward to! Students that join City Farm Camp with EnrichLA will have the opportunity to be immersed into the world of organic gardening, interact with farm animals, and learn about healthy lifestyle choices. This year we will have two sessions of City Farm Camp taking place at Taking the Reins, a beautiful equestrian center in Atwater Village.

Since our last update, we’ve finished building the garden at Riverside Drive Charter. With the help of parent volunteers, we were able to create this lovely space (which will be soon filled with luscious greenery!). Ranger Sara will begin Ranger classes on Friday and we’re so excited to give them some hands-on experience in the dirt!

Over at Mid-City Prescott, we finished the farm expansion with the help of the Warner Group. We took out old winter crops and replaced them with summer crops, such as tomatoes, basil, and sweet peppers.  We also built and planted new row crops to expand the growing space of the garden. This farm is shaping up to be a little bit of country in the middle of the city!

We are always looking for ways to introduce the food grown in the garden to the kids. This month Ranger Jeff demonstrated and gave away his rosemary and oregano rice recipe for them to try at home. And Ranger Justine showed the kids how to make bruschetta. Feel free to try out these great recipes for yourself!

With all this expansion, we’re looking for people from the community to join our team! We’re hiring Garden Rangers to help teach students throughout the greater Los Angeles area about the garden and healthy eating.
